My Obligations dashboard

My Obligations (Account → My Obligations, or /app/obligations) tracks what your NZ ETS obligated activities owe in units each year. You describe each activity once - a disposal facility, coal or natural gas purchasing, or HFC imports - and the dashboard keeps an indicative liability, your position against your custody wallet, the compliance calendar and reminder notifications in one place, with one click through to cover any shortfall on the marketplace.

Where the numbers come from

All figures are calculated from published statutory default emissions factors - the Climate Change (Stationary Energy and Industrial Processes) Regulations 2009 (coal classes, natural gas fields, synthetic greenhouse gas GWPs) and the Climate Change (Waste) Regulations 2010 (the default waste factor of 1.023 tCO2e per net tonne). One tonne of CO2-equivalent equals one NZU.

  • Disposal facilities - gross tonnes minus diverted tonnes, times the default factor, or your EPA-approved unique emissions factor if you enter one with its reference.
  • Coal purchasing - energy content (TJ) times the statutory factor for your coal class; enter TJ directly or tonnes with the calorific value from your supplier records.
  • Natural gas purchasing - TJ times the statutory factor for your gas field.
  • HFC and refrigerant imports - kilograms per gas times the statutory GWP, for pure gases and blend classes like R404A or R410A.

Your position and covering a shortfall

The dashboard compares your total indicative liability with the NZUs in your Carbon Trader custody wallet. A shortfall shows a Cover your shortfall button that starts a marketplace buy request with the quantity prefilled - you set your own price. You can also browse live listings or open a private quote room for larger volumes. When the market has a last traded price, the dashboard shows the indicative dollar cost at that price only.

Calendar and reminders

Statutory dates for non-forestry participants: the annual emissions return is due 31 March and units must be surrendered by 31 May. Reminder notifications go out on 1 March and 1 May to accounts with active obligated activities. Display only - Carbon Trader never files returns or surrenders units for you.

Public calculator

The same maths powers the free calculator on the compliance buyers page - no account needed. Creating an account simply saves your activities so the position stays live.

The limits - please read

Dashboard figures are indicative only. The EPA determines actual obligations through your emissions returns, and unique emissions factors or your own measured data may change the result. Dollar figures appear only when the marketplace has a last traded price, and only at that price. Nothing in My Obligations is financial, legal or tax advice - for filing and surrender questions, talk to the EPA or your adviser.
