My Forest dashboard

My Forest (Account → My Forest, or /app/forestry) tracks what your post-1989 forest blocks are earning in NZUs. You describe each block once - forest type, region for radiata pine, planting year, hectares and accounting method - and the dashboard keeps an indicative accumulation curve, the current emissions return period projection, published MPI costs and a compliance calendar in one place.

Where the numbers come from

All unit quantities are calculated from the default carbon tables in the Climate Change (Forestry) Regulations 2022, Schedule 4 - the same tables MPI applies to participants with less than 100 hectares of post-1989 forest. The tables give tonnes of carbon dioxide stored per hectare for each forest type and age (radiata pine varies by region); one tonne equals one NZU.

  • Averaging accounting (standard for most forests registered since 2023) - credits accrue until the forest reaches its type's average age: radiata pine 16, Douglas fir 26, exotic softwoods 22, exotic hardwoods 12, indigenous 23. The curve plateaus there, and no surrender is expected on harvest if you replant.
  • Permanent forest category - credits keep accruing to the end of the tables (age 50).
  • Stock change (legacy) - for older registrations that kept stock change accounting; the curve is uncapped but harvest carries surrender obligations.

What the dashboard shows

  • Totals - blocks, hectares, indicative units accrued to date and the projection for the current 2026 - 2030 mandatory emissions return period.
  • Accumulation curve - cumulative units by calendar year per block, with a today marker and a full yearly table view.
  • Actual returns - record the units MPI actually issued for each return you file, so you can compare actuals against the projection.
  • MPI running costs - the published annual charge per hectare and the per-return fee (effective 1 July 2026). These are MPI charges, not Carbon Trader fees.
  • Compliance calendar - the voluntary return window each January - June, the end of the current mandatory period and the final return window. Display only - Carbon Trader does not file returns for you.

Public calculator

The same maths powers the free calculator on the forestry page - no account needed. Creating an account simply saves your blocks so the curve stays live.

Selling accumulated units

When units from your emissions returns are in your Carbon Trader custody wallet, the List units for sale button starts a marketplace listing for you. Listings are self-service spot sales - you set the quantity and price, and settlement runs through the platform's managed escrow like any other listing.

The limits - please read

Dashboard figures are indicative only. MPI determines actual entitlements through emissions returns, and your registration, carbon accounting area configuration and accounting method all affect the outcome. Dollar figures appear only when the marketplace has a last traded price, and only at that price. Nothing in My Forest is financial, forestry, legal or tax advice - for ETS registration and filing questions, talk to MPI / Te Uru Rākau or your adviser.
