Effective date: 27 August 2026. This page applies to accounts on the Carbon Trader® website and the Carbon Trader mobile app, which share one account.
1. What you can ask for
You can ask us at any time to close your account and delete the personal information we hold about you. When we do, your sign-in is disabled on the website and in the app, any listings or buy requests you have open are withdrawn, and your profile, contact details, notification preferences, dashboard data (obligations, forest, farm and Carbon Tracker entries) and stored settings are deleted.
2. What the law requires us to keep
Carbon Trader® is a reporting entity under New Zealand's anti-money-laundering law and a financial service provider, so some records cannot be deleted on request. This is the same commitment our Privacy Policy makes in section 12:
- Identity verification records (the KYC, KYB and screening results gathered when you registered) for at least five years after your account closes, as the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009 requires.
- Transaction, settlement, invoice and payment records for at least seven years, as tax and financial-services record-keeping obligations require.
- Records we need to deal with an open complaint, dispute, or legal obligation, until it is resolved.
We keep only what those obligations require, restrict who can access it, and delete it when the retention period ends. Everything else goes. If you never verified your identity or never transacted, there is usually nothing we must keep.
3. Before you ask
We cannot close an account that still holds NZUs in a Carbon Trader® Wallet or has money in escrow. If that applies to you, withdraw your units to your own Emissions Trading Register account and let any open settlement complete first. We will tell you if anything is outstanding.
4. How to request deletion
Use the form on this page, or email info@carbontrader.nz with the subject Account deletion request. Please write from the email address registered to the account: we verify that a request comes from the account holder before acting on it, and may ask you to confirm from that address.
5. What happens next
We acknowledge your request within two working days, confirm it is genuinely yours, and complete the closure and deletion within 30 days. We then write to tell you it is done, and list exactly which records we have had to keep under section 2 and for how long.
6. From the mobile app
In the Carbon Trader app, open Account and choose Delete my account, which brings you to this page.
